ABOUT
Ava Hill, whose traditional name is Iohahatie, joins Sussex as Senior Counsel with extensive experience in Indigenous advocacy, facilitation, leadership, and government relations.
A proud Mohawk of the Wolf Clan from the Six Nations Reserve, Ava served as the Elected Chief of the 56th and 57th Six Nations Elected Council and spent fifteen years on the Council.
Prior to Sussex, Ava served as Executive Director of the Chiefs in Ontario Office and Executive Assistant to both the former National Chief at the Assembly of First Nations and the Co-Chair of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. She has also served on the Board of Governors at the University of Waterloo. She is currently a National Consortium for Indigenous Economic Development member at the University of Victoria.
Her leadership extends to sports, where she served as the Co-Chair and Co-Author for the Commonwealth Games Federation Sport Declaration, focusing on Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples Through Sports, and a key figure in fundraising for the Woodland Cultural Centre.
Ava's contributions have been recognized with the YMCA Peacemaker Medal, an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Brock University, and the title of Paul Harris Fellow from the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.
Outside of work, Ava is an avid sports fan and enjoys travelling and reading.
