Prime Minister Publishes Mandate Letters
This afternoon, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau released the much-anticipated ministerial mandate letters to the 38 Cabinet Ministers that comprise his government. These mandate letters have been hotly anticipated since Cabinet was named on October 26th, almost two months ago.
Mandate letters assign commitments made during the campaign and throne speech to specific Ministers who are expected to achieve near-term results. They also provide insight into the agenda of the government and provide avenues to tie policy and project asks to documented priorities. The government will be held accountable for these commitments through tracking and public reports, which is followed closely by the opposition parties in Parliament, media, stakeholder groups and by the public at large.
In his preamble that is included in each letter, the Prime Minister states that in the election held in September, Canadians entrusted the government to finish the fight against COVID-19 and support the recovery of a strong middle class while taking bold, concrete action to build a healthier, more resilient future. The Prime Minister then notes climate change and Indigenous reconciliation as two paramount issues that will guide all elements of government’s agenda going forward.
Sussex will be busy in the days ahead evaluating each mandate letter to identify opportunities to tie client interests – both policies and projects – to these public statements on the top priorities for the government as we enter 2022.
