Minister Wilkinson Seeks Critical Minerals Input
Yesterday afternoon, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson released the Government of Canada's Discussion Paper which seeks input to inform Canada’s Critical Minerals Strategy. The strategy is meant to build on the government’s nearly $3.8-billion commitment on critical minerals in Budget 2022. It will also complement the work of the Regional Energy and Resource Tables.
Critical minerals are essential to powering the green economy of the future. Increasing demand and constrained supply of these all-important minerals are presenting Canada with a significant economic opportunity.
The Discussion Paper seeks input from provinces and territories, Indigenous Peoples, industry and interested stakeholders, guided by five key outcomes:
- economic growth and competitiveness;
- environmental protection and climate action;
- enhanced security and partnership with allies;
- advancing reconciliation; and,
- advancing diversity and inclusion.
The deadline to submit comments on the Discussion Paper is September 15, 2022. The Minister plans to release the final copy of Canada’s Critical Minerals Strategy in late 2022.
