Hon. Pierre Poilievre Unveils Shadow Cabinet/Critic Portfolios

This afternoon in Ottawa, during the first break week of the fall Parliamentary sitting, The Honourable Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and His Majesty’s Official Opposition, unveiled the team he intends to present as the Government-in-waiting to the Trudeau Liberals. The announcement comes a little over a month after Poilievre resoundingly won the Party leadership on the first ballot and a few weeks after announcing his senior leadership team.

The new Shadow Cabinet comes it at a hefty 69 positions, 30 more than there are presently Ministers in Cabinet. The rationale for this expansive list appears to be the desire to reward MPs who backed Poilievre’s leadership bid as well as breaking up files into smaller pieces or on a regional basis. For example, Health, Mental Health and Addictions serve as three different portfolios. There are also unique positions such as Shadow Minister for Supply Chain Issues (Matt Jeneroux) and Red Tape Reduction (Scot Davidson) to place added emphasis on the economy and inflation which have formed the central battleground early in this sitting.

Notable picks/promotions include Jasraj Singh Hallan being tapped for Finance and Middle Class Prosperity, a role occupied by Poilievre himself in the past, Leslyn Lewis taking over Infrastructure, Gerard Deltell being tapped for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Stephen Ellis at Health and Rachel Thomas being slotted in for Heritage replacing John Nater. Longtime party stalwarts and former Harper era Cabinet Ministers Michael Chong and Rob Moore retained their portfolios at Foreign Affairs and Justice and Attorney General respectively. Rick Perkins will serve as Innovation, Science and Industry Shadow Minister, notable given Perkins’ endorsement of Poilievre’s rival, Jean Charest, for the Party leadership.

Absences include former Party leader Erin O’Toole as well as former Harper era Cabinet Ministers Ed Fast and Michelle Rempel Garner, both of whom had been critical of the Poilievre campaign during various points of the leadership race.
